I have a good fitness base, which was accomplished mainly through running. It’s time for me to buckle down and start swimming and cycling more (it’s been time for a long time). Any good training plans for 6 weeks.
check out beginnertriathlete.com and look at some swim and bike focused plans. If you have a good enough running background, focus almost exclusively on the other sports while running once a week. In 6 weeks you will not lose your running ability.

I’m in the process of training for a triathalon and want to loose some weight. I’m 18, 5′5", and weigh 122 pounds. I love the swimming part of the triathalon, but I’m not much for the biking and running. I want to loose weight, but in a healthy way. How can I go about doing this? I always eat granola bars before a workout.
The best way is to just not worry about it. You’ll naturally get toned as you continue training. Also, you don’t have to be super thin or lose alot of weight to be a strong triathlete. Many triathletes find that if they focus on maintaining or losing weight, they’re performance suffers. Your body needs lots of energy to be able to finish a tri and if you’re forcing yourself to lose weight your body is burning more energy than you are putting into it on a daily basis which will not help you at all come race day.
When I started doing tri’s last year I thought I had to lose weight to get better, but after a month of training and rapid weight loss, I always felt weak and i wasn’t getting any faster. I started eating more, especially immediatley following my workouts. I’ve found a good post workout meal to be a bagel (preferably whole grain), some yogurt (get whatever brand has the most protein, around here its Hy-Vee store brand yogurt), and maybe some plain grilled chicken.
Ideally, as you train your body will naturally find it’s balance between strength and weight. You might even gain weight, but you’ll be more toned than you’ve ever been before and thats what counts!
I want a new bike! I’m riding a Felt S32 and am dying for something faster (I know I have to be fast too). Any suggestions?
I am not a beginner – but I am a rank amateur. Three or four tri’s a year for the past 12 years – a top third finish is a great result for me – my goal is usually top half. I am a good swimmer and a decent cyclist. My cycling times suffer because I am trying to rest up for the run, which is inevitably painful for me.
I still ride my vintage 1990 Miyata steel framed bike.
I have had urges to spring for a $2500 bike over the years, but always postpone (even though I can comfortably afford the new bike). My bike works great. I am as fast as I need to be. If I buy a new bike – it will mostly be for novelty and fun – as the marginal improvement in times will be very small. You know, those Specialized Tarmacs look sweet – perhaps one of these days?!?!?!
If you are a beginner – get a few races under your belt and see what you feel like then. You may find yourself flying by people with bikes twice as expensive as yours. Even I do that, and I am not really a super athlete/racer.
But enjoy – if you have the money – why not – that will be fun. But don’t think that you have to do it in order to perform.
If you spend more time training – instead of earning extra cash for the bike – that will bring your times down more than the bike.
