Im an ASA coach and a WSI instructor. One of the fundamental skills of the freestyle stroke is the body roll. As much as you roll your body up to pivot your head out of the water to take a breathe is how much you should be pivoting on the other side even when not taking a breathe. This not only allows the arms to come in at a much steeper angle but also allows you to have much more efficient flutter kicks. The breathing on both sides in a TRI is to promote the efficiency of body roll

    Triathlon swimming …
Triathlon swimming is different than 400M and any other short distance Michael Phelps like swimming. It’s about efficiency, and conserving energy for the other 2 sports after you are done with the swim. Remember those? biking and running.

    Her remarks on …
Her remarks on rolling are just wrong. Yes, you should roll when stroking. But no, you don’t want to roll as much as she does. If you do so, you will see that your pulling arm is way too much beneath you, where you want your arm to be at your side… This will produce a very restless and inefficient stroke
