I am training for my first triathlon ever! What is the best way to prepare for the swim portion of the race?
Add commentsI’ve never really swam enough to say that I am prepared to complete the 1mile swim portion of the race. In fact, I’m not too sure I can get the breathing down before the race. What should I do?
Sign up for swim lessons. Breathing and good technique are not hard to pick up if you have some swimming ability. Also, see if you can get the video, Total Emerson, this is a video that I use when teaching adults and there are a lot of tips if you can stay awake, in the video itself. There are also sites you can go to to get swim workouts to prepare for the mile. You’ll want to have some endurance workouts as well as some sprinting drills that will help. If this fails ask a swimmer to swim that portion of the triathlon.

One mile swim?!? Whew! You’re not taking it easy on that first triathlon, are you?
I suggest you contact a local masters swimming group. Depending on the group, they will have coaching and training assistance. Other triathletes are often involved in these groups, so you might be able to link up with an experienced triathlete.
I also suggest you get some open-water swimming experience before the race, if you can.
Use link below to find a local masters swimming program near you.
